Palazzo Beccari Freguglia
A residence that spans the centuries
Built in the 15th century and later expanded in the 16th, Palazzo Beccari Freguglia is one of Ferrara’s most important private residences.
Set in the heart of the historic centre, the building still preserves its original layout, with inner courtyards, terracotta arches and colonnades that reflect the refined Renaissance taste of the Este court.
The palace takes its name from the two noble families that shaped its story: the Beccari—among the leading families of Renaissance Ferrara—and the Freguglia, who later became its owners. The Beccari played a prominent role in the city’s cultural and political life; members of the local aristocracy, they were active participants in the humanist fervour fostered by the House of Este. The later connection with the Freguglia family kept the residence’s prestige alive, and over time it remained one of the historic centre’s most representative private homes.
Over the centuries, the palazzo has retained all of its charm, right up to the 2018 restoration, which enhanced its beauty while introducing contemporary comfort and design.
Today it is home to Maxxim Hotel & Loft, the city’s only officially recognised Dimora d’Epoca, where Ferrara’s history lives on in a modern key.
